Let The Toy Fair Begin!
Toy Fair 2014 has kicked off another year’s worth of toy reveals and teasers. I am not at Toy Fair and unfortunately have never gone, but there is already so much coverage of the event that it feels like you’re there anyway. In this post I am mostly, if not only, going to talk about NECA Toys and the products they have launching in the first half of this year. I’m a big toy collector and about 90% of my collection is from NECA. They have good price points on their products and I feel like their line ups just get better every year. I may talk about a few other toy companies that have some interesting stuff coming out this year. If I manage to neglect your favorite company or new hot toy that was just announced you can always head over to Figures.com for more in-depth coverage of Toy Fair 2014.
In space no one can hear you scream . . .
I’d like to take this time to share the life of Craig Windrix. Craig Windrix first took the toy community by storm when at last summer’s SDCC, NECA announced that they’d be issuing a custom Colonial Marine into series 2 of their Aliens line. Craig Windrix was never in the movie Aliens, or in any Alien movie. Craig Windrix was a solider though, a fighter, a warrior, in the truest sense of the words. Craig is the brother of NECA’s sculptor Kyle Windrix, and it was Kyle’s honor to cement his brother’s legacy in plastic. Kyle wanted to share his brother with the world, and he did. This figure features deco that represent Windrix and the life he lived which makes this a special figure to have on your shelf. It’s personable, it resonates with you, and stands as a reminder that life is so fragile. Cherish it.
On February 6th, 2014, the toy community and collector’s everywhere mourned the loss of a person we felt so connected to thanks to NECA and the tribute they made to this fighter. Craig Windrix battled stomach cancer for 10 hard months. All proceeds from the sales of the Craig Windrix action figure went to the Windrix family to support medical costs. I encourage you to read his obituary from The Purcell Register.
Stay Frosty Sgt. Windrix, may you rest in peace.
Please, continue to purchase this figure wherever you may find it, or while supplies last at BigBadToyStore.com.
My second favorite line up to NECA’s Predators line, Aliens. Although this would be my first favorite line, and it’s almost there, there’s just not enough content yet. My Predator shelf completely dwarves the amount of Alien stuff that I have currently. This year that will most likely change as NECA has ramped up their production of the popular sci-fi movie.
[Update:] NECA Toys has announced that they have reached a deal with Sigourney Weaver to use her likeness and will be making figures of the famous Ellen Ripley. No word of release window or any production photos yet. However, with the 35th anniversary series coming up it is possible that Ripley could be released as early as series 4. Now I know why we saw the Power Loader earlier in the show.
The first figures planned for Ellen Ripley are of her in Nostromo jumpsuit from the original film Alien, directed by Ridley Scott. That will be followed up by a figure based on her Sigourney Weaver’s character in the 1986 film Aliens, directed by James Cameron.
Ellen Ripley figures will be on display for San Diego Comic Con later this year.
[Update #2:] Not only did NECA show off the Power Loader with a release later this year. They have also announced that a Deluxe Boxed Alien Queen, in scale to the 7″ figure line, will be available this July! So get ready to recreate some iconic scenes from the greatest science-fiction franchise of all time.
Series 3 of the Aliens line will feature fan favorites from all three films! Kane from Alien, with his helmet smashed in by a face hugger, Bishop in his jumpsuit, and the dog alien from Alien 3. This is a strong line up for Alien fans everywhere and I really like the detail on Kane and his face hugger. Series 3 will launch this July.
Also on display from series 4 is Dallas, in his spacesuit. Series 4 will release sometime this fall.
And a surprise to us all, because we never thought this figure would happen without another specific character, Ripley. Introducing the Power Loader, coming this summer!
The Alien Queen is also still being sculpted by Kyle Windrix and will be on display later this year at SDCC. She will still be released this year, most likely closer to the Fall or Winter. Then after that NECA does plan to make quarter scale Aliens. I have been waiting for the Alien Queen for almost two years, it’s so close I can smell it. I got rid of my McFarlane Queen because this Queen will be a proper movie accurate portrayal of her highness.
By far NECA’s most successful toy line over the past four years. This year we will see the release of Series 12 and Series 13 in this toy line! That’s an insane amount of Predators! By the end of 2013, NECA has released over 50 different Predators! I thankfully own them all, this is my favorite line, Predator was my favorite movie as a child, after Alien. These figures have improved so much over the years that I can’t wait to see what they do with the line next. I’ve reached out to Randy Falk on Twitter and told him that I hope this line of toys goes to at least 20 series, or more! There is so much source material to create new Predators from and I hope we get to see more unique and creative monsters in the coming years.
In May, NECA is releasing another Classic 1989 Predator based on the NES video game. This Classic Predator has a very cool shade of dark blue that gives it a unique look. The packaging for these NES figures look much like the old NES boxes and have a window display.
Series 12 launches in June and features two Predators from the comic book, Bad Blood. These Predators are Bad Blood, and The Enforcer and they look amazing. Finally, making his return back into the fold after a few delays, and being bumped out of Series 11 for Thermal Vision Dutch, Elder Predator 2.0 makes his appearance! A completely redesigned sculpt that features improved articulation, materials, and accessories.
Soon after we will see another series of Kenner inspired Predators. Series 13 will feature Scavage, Cracked Tusk, and Renegade. Expect to see these figures hit toy shelves around August.
If that wasn’t exciting enough, NECA has gone above and beyond any Predator fans’ expectations. In August, NECA will be releasing another massive, deluxe figure that you will want to have in your Predator collection. Based on the original Kenner design and greatly improved for modern toy collectors, NECA introduces the two foot long Blade Fighter. This vehicle is massive, fully detailed, and loaded to the teeth with weaponry. The cannons on the underbelly of the vehicle can be removed and can be used by the included pilot, the Viper Predator.
Another Predator based off of a mini-comic the Viper Predator is orange, black, and yellow, has short dreadlocks, comes with a removable mask, and blade gauntlets. This figure set shouldn’t set the average collector back too much with a very reasonable price tag of about $70. They’ve basically packaged a $20 figure with a $50 deluxe figure.

Heath Ledger – Joker!
At last! The Ledger Joker is here! I can’t wait, but at the same time it makes me sad being reminded of the way this actor lost his life. It’s unfortunate that drugs become such an addicting force and take a stranglehold on people’s lives. I know all too well how devastating it is to lose someone to drugs. NECA has done a great job on this sculpt and has done Ledger’s character a great service with life like detail, interchangeable hands, accessories which include a knife, pistol, and machine gun.
You can preorder yours now at BigBadToyStore.com. This quarter scale figure is expected to release this summer in July. NECA also has a quarter scale version of the Arkham Origins Batman set to release in May.

Big news for fans of last Summer’s blockbuster hit Pacific Rim, and I mean big news! The 18″ Knifehead is well on its way to being released in May. This gargantuan figure is extremely detailed articulation even down to the fingers and a very cool light up feature that really makes Knifehead pop in the right lighting. I already own the 18″ Gipsy Danger and I can’t wait to add more of these 18″ figures to my collection. The fun doesn’t stop there though! Yesterday, NECA announced that they will be continuing the 18″ Pacific Rim line, with next in the series being Cherno Alpha. These 18″ figures are massive and are perfect for any dedicated fan of the Pacific Rim franchise. I can’t wait to see what they do next with this, can you imagine an 18″ Axehead!
It’s also been revealed that NECA is bringing Pacific Rim to their new Scalers line. Scalers are a unique way of decorating your cables and cords with figures from your favorite movies. Alien, Predator, Gremlins, and more. You can now add Pacific Rim to that list. If you’re at Toy Fair stop by NECA’s booth and check out the prototype they have on display of the Knifehead Scaler.
As the 7″ Pacific Rim has begun to grow NECA has tweaked and improved the articulation points on the Kaiju and Jaegers. This is good news because the previous version of Knifehead felt a bit stiff. Series 3 will be shipping to retailers soon and will feature two waves that release at the same time. Cherno Alpha and Coyote Tango are in the Jaeger wave of Series 3. Axehead (Trespasser) along with an updated and Battle Damaged Knifehead are in the Kaiju wave of Series 3.
Series 4 isn’t too far off as NECA plans to have more Kaijus and Jaegers fighting for position on your shelf sometime around June! Series 4 will feature another Axehead, but this time based on concept art. If you have The Making of Pacific Rim book you might be able to get a sneak peak at what that figure might look like, or I might update this post with a photo from the book later on. I really hope that this means NECA will pull monster designs from the comic book prequel. Series 4 will also include the Scunner. It is rumored that in Series 5 we may see an updated Gypsy Danger, that’s bigger, improved articulation and features more weaponry such as interchangeable plasma cannons.

I mentioned that NECA is bringing Pacific Rim to their new Scalers line. What are Scalers? Scalers are small figurines that you can use to decorate your cords and cables, such as headphones, auxiliary cables, USB cables, backpack cords, and many more! If you can think of something they can scale, they can do it.
The Scaler series has been a huge hit so far and the first set is just about to be on retailer shelves any day now. There are two waves that are launching side-by-side each other and they include:
- Freddy Krueger
- Jason Vorhees
NECA has a few new Scalers on display at their booth at Toy Fair so check them out. You’ll find Spider-Man, Batman, and the prototype Knifehead on display.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LLC_2h2pms]

I like Robocop, I thought it was an awesome movie, and no I am not talking about the Hollywood remake of one of the greatest action films of our time. Not too long ago NECA released a 10″ ED-209 with sounds from the movies! I have it and I love it. Before I owned the ED-209 I only owned the Spring Loaded Robocop, and the Battle Damaged Robocop, and I didn’t quite care for my Robocop collection at all. That all changed when last summer NECA announced that they would be shipping an ED-209. I love this thing, but I do wish it had more of a “die-cast” feel to it. That doesn’t take away from the awesomeness of the ED-209 though.
At this point I figured my Robocop collecting was done. There couldn’t possibly be any other Robocop figure that would be worthy of adding to my shelf. Well, as of right now, I was wrong and there is another Robocop figure that I want. A Deluxe Robocop action figure, and this thing looks bad ass!
As you can see from the photo above Robocop has a jetpack! I’m not sure if the jetpack is removable. It would be cool if it were removable but I have a feeling that it is a part of the sculpt. Randy Falk, confirmed on Twitter that this Robocop would come with an extra hand, a pistol, will cost about $30, and is shipping this summer. This will be a nice addition to the Robocop line and to my shelf. I am intrigued to see what NECA will do with this license next.

Planet of the Apes
More info coming soon.
NECA continues to be the premier manufacturer of quarter scale and eighteen inch action figures. NECA has done a superb job on their Predator series, Adam West’s Batman, 1989 Batman, and their Marvel series as well. I am fortunate enough to own every one of these pieces from their respective series. The detail on their 18″ figures is impeccable and at a very fair price for their size. This year they’re adding another hero to their quarter scale line up.
The Master Chief.

Team Fortress 2 Series 3: Red Team has been available for preorder for awhile now at many retailers and will be arriving in April. This series features the Spy and Engineer classes of the extraordinarily popular Team Fortress 2 video game.
The Engineer will come with a tool box and a monkey wrench, and the Spy will come with his revolver.
After what seems like an eternity since their announcement last year, P-Body and Atlas, are ready to portal their way onto your shelf this May!
No word of any new announcements for the Valve license, but if anything new happens, it will be posted as soon as it is.

This should come as no surprise if you’ve been following along with NECA for the past six months. NECA does have a license to the Diablo franchise and they are getting ready to release their first wave of products this Spring. The one item I am looking forward to the most is this 12″ figure of Diablo himself.
This is the Diablo from Diablo 3 and looks really cool. NECA also has plans to release some weapon replicas from the game lore as well. I am not sure if the left arm is broken of that was an intentional design it looks to be intentional, but I haven’t played the game in awhile so I do forget what Diablo looks like. The mandibles on the shoulder are very creepy. The one reason I do want this figure is because it’s different from some of the stuff I own, and I do like the Diablo video games.
This figure will ship in May.

NECA announced another Motorized Patriot to the series, Benjamin Franklin, to join alongside President George Washington.
Since last year, fans of Bioshock Infinite and NECA Toys have been pleading for a Booker DeWight figure. We were told we were going to get one at some point. Eventually it was announced that this figure would be on hold and many of us began to think that this toy would never come out. Many fans of this series were worried that Booker DeWight fell to the same fate as the Prometheus line. Fear not fans because NECA yesterday unveiled to the public the sculpt for the figure. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that there is a release window just yet. They have revealed this to gauge interest in the figure a year after the game’s release.

There is currently an embargo on all figures and images of the newest Godzilla monster for this year’s upcoming movie. However, if you are at Toy Fair, I believe if you swing by the NECA booth they are allowed to show you. Just remember, no photography! What I do know is that there will be a 12″ and 24″ head-to-tail version of this new movie monster available closer to the movie’s release. These figures stand at 6″ and 12″ respectively. You can pre-order these Zilla monsters at BigBadToyStore.com.
TohoKingdom.com had the exclusive reveal of the NECA classic Godzilla for the first time. Classic series 1 will also include the 1985 Godzilla. Few photos are available at this time and TohoKingdom.com has provided the first product photo of he 1994 Godzilla.
It should be available to preorder sometime soon at BigBadToyStore.com.
The below image shows the 6″ Godzilla that measures 12″ from head to tail and features 30 points (maybe more) of articulation. Can you say stop motion for days?
NECA has also said that they have plans to release several different Godzilla monsters and possibly other monsters as well. This is big news for long time Godzilla fans. I have been waiting to get any new Godzilla monsters for this very reason and I can’t wait to add these to my collection.
Hasbro’s Star Wars Black Series
Surprise, surprise, a segment not devoted to NECA product lines. Yep, it’s Hasbro’s Star Wars 6″ Black Series. This is a collection of toys I’ve waited for my entire life, essentially. I was never a fan of the 3 3/4″ figures that were popular back in the day. I actually don’t like any 3 3/4″ figure. I like to see all of the details in my action figures and those smaller toys just never cut it. I still do have plenty of my earlier Star Wars figures on display, but the 6″ line has slowly begun to take its place and with good reason.
Hasbro has plans for new packaging that are larger and will accommodate bigger figures. This larger packaging scheme will make way for Chewbacca and Jabba the Hutt later this year. Yes, they will all be in scale to the rest of the figures in the line. This is exciting because I have the 3 3/4″ scale Jabba and I can’t wait to see how massive a 6″ scale Jabba is going to be! Also this year we will see Episode IV Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Along with them an Episode 2 Clone Trooper, and a standard Storm Trooper will be released most likely together in Series 4.
Hasbro is also launching the first ever 6″ Black Series vehicle with the Speeder Bike! Not only that, but it includes a pilot and it comes with a posable display stand! This is very cool news because I feel like not enough companies make vehicles for 6″ scale figures. This year two companies are doing that!

Mezco Toyz’ Breaking Bad
Mezco Toyz has finally shown off . . . none other than.
Now that Mezco Toyz has revealed Jesse Pinkman you can be assured that there will be various repaints of this figure in different jumpsuits. I am sure Mezco is also working on a “Street Clothes variant of Captain Cook.” Most likely judging by the Walter White/Heisenberg repaints they will carefully craft Jesse Pinkman to be reused in different formats.
Along with the announcement of more 6″ figures from the Breaking Bad license there are pillow sets as well. The series’ famous “Br, Ba” from the title screen, the drawing of Heisenberg, and a “Better Call Saul” throw pillow. These are a cool idea and are priced reasonably with other throw pillows.
That’s not all, or even the coolest merchandise coming out. Sometime this summer Mezco plans to release “The Pink Teddy Bear.” Fans of the show will know what I am talking about, but if not, here’s a photo!

Game of Thrones
The hype train continues to roll on through right into Game of Thrones. This is probably one of the most underrated license for manufacturers. NECA’s not interested in doing TV licenses they don’t believe that they will do well as a 6″ figure series. You wouldn’t expect anyone to make figures from The Wire or The Sopranos. There are exceptions though, like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and more importantly Game of Thrones. Funko does have a license to produce 6″ action figures, but I’m not a fan of them. The detail isn’t there, the likeness isn’t entirely there.
I have enjoyed the Dark Horse 6″ statues, they’re excellent quality, and fairly cheap at $20. I look forward to their take on Cersei and Jamie Lannister. I’ve seen photos of them on display and they look really good. They’ll be in the third series of line later this year. Series 2 will ship closer to the start of the fourth season of the show.
This is a huge license for the bigger manufactures to pass up. I hope that may change in the future, because I would like to see NECA do a 6″ line of Game of Thrones. There are over a dozen characters to choose from to start the series off and have strong sales numbers. That’s my take on the need for more companies to jump on this bandwagon.
Moving along there are some really cool merchandise coming out for Games of Thrones. There is definitely a high-end market for Game of Thrones featuring replicas, busts, and statues. Then there is this snow globe with a Weirdwood in it. It’s coming out and March and has a price tag of $99.99. Yikes, I wanted one too.
My favorite item shown off at the Game of Thrones booth this week was a set of map markers used by Robb Stark to plan his military strategies. Also coming out in March and a price tag of $199. These items will most likely be the envy of every Game of Thrones collector you know.
