Earlier today, the home screen of Irrational Games website became an open letter to the public written by Ken Levine. In this open letter to the public Ken Levine states that he is “deeply proud” of what he and his studio have created together over the past 17 years. He goes on to say that he is “winding down Irrational Games as you know it.” Ken Levine, will be starting a new, much smaller, “more entrepreneurial endeavor,” at Take-Two. He is also only taking 15 members of his current development staff to the new project.
This move sadly leaves about 90% of Irrational Games’ developers out of work. In a move of good will and common courtesy, the studio will remain open for the developers to put together their portfolios, and say their goodbyes. The studio will provide financial support to their now former employees. The other Take-Two studios will also “be on hand to discuss opportunities within the company,” as well as, hosting a recruiting day for other developers to come and interview the staff.
As news began to spread fellow developers have begun to reach out to the displaced employees using the hashtag “#IrrationalJobs” on Twitter. A Google Doc has also appeared filled with new opportunities for the exiting employees. Ken Levine also noted on his open letter that developers and publishers should email firstname.lastname@example.org directly with any interest in interviewing the departing employees.
Hopefully, with the support that these employees are receiving from their former employer and with the social outreach these developers can find new projects easily and without much delay.
